Job Description

Animal Technician

We are working with a leading research organisation dedicated to advancing biomedical science through innovative preclinical research. The organisation provides a collaborative and supportive environment where animal care teams play a vital role in enabling high-quality scientific programmes.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Animal Technician to join a busy Biological Services Unit supporting cutting-edge research.

As an Animal Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining exceptional standards of animal care and welfare, ensuring the smooth operation of the animal facility, and supporting researchers with the delivery of high-quality preclinical studies.

This role would suit someone with experience in laboratory animal care who is looking to develop their skills further within a professional research environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily husbandry and welfare support for laboratory mice.
  • Perform routine animal care tasks including feeding, cleaning, health checks and environmental monitoring.
  • Monitor animal health and behaviour, identifying and escalating any welfare concerns.
  • Assist with breeding programmes, weaning, identification and colony management.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to animal care, procedures and facility activities.
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of animal rooms and equipment.
  • Ensure high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and biosecurity are maintained across the facility.
  • Assist scientific teams with the practical requirements of preclinical studies.
  • Work in accordance with Home Office regulations, the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act (ASPA), local SOPs and health and safety guidelines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Biological Services Unit.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous experience working with laboratory animals, preferably mice.
  • A strong understanding of animal welfare principles and best practice husbandry.
  • Good observational skills with the ability to recognise changes in animal health or behaviour.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
  • The ability to follow written procedures and work to high standards.
  • A reliable, organised and flexible approach.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • The right to work in the UK.

If you are passionate about animal care and want to play an important role in supporting biomedical research, we would welcome your application.
