About GAS Textiles

GAS Textiles specialises in creating and repairing high-quality, bespoke textile products for the photography, studio, and film industries.

We started in house as part of GAS Hire, from a frustration with the waste of damaged bags and equipment, and the potential for damage with gear that came insufficiently protected.  As word spread about our repairs service and people started seeing the potential for our custom bags and their kit, we outgrew the warehouse and established ourselves independently.

Our ethos has always been to repair and reinforce where possible, with a focus on high-grade materials and durable construction that extends the life of the products we make and the equipment they protect.

We are a small team, that is growing as we work with more rental houses and individuals.  The products we repair and create are wide ranging, from sun shades for  iPad minis to 75sqm immersive projection spaces; working with fabrics from silk habotai to ballistic grade nylon.  As such there is room for a diverse range of skills in our team.  We currently have people from photography, fashion and product design backgrounds, all with the same aim – to divert waste from landfill and create well engineered and enduring products.

Job Description

Salary: £30,784 

We are looking for a reliable, full-time Studio Assistant to join our team.  The roll is in-house, at our studio in Tottenham Hale, working Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm.

It is a varied hands-on role, suited to someone who is highly organised, self-motivated and enjoys practical detail-oriented work.  

Key Responsibilities

• The cutting and preparation of fabric and components ready for construction and the application of heat transfer prints.
• Basic pattern cutting.
• Finishing tasks such as trimming, pressing and eyeleting.
• Simple hand and machine sewing for repairs.
• Help sourcing fabrics and components, keeping the fabric and components library up to date and maintaining the inventory.
• Assistance with loading, unloading, and moving stock and materials around the workroom.
• Maintaining a clean, tidy and well organised workroom.  Running errands e.g. going to the post office.
• Supporting the wider team flexibly across different jobs as needed.

Requirements

• A creative, practical approach with experience creating things by hand and a willingness to learn new skills.
• Basic sewing skills, both hand and machine, ideally on industrial sewing machines but this can be taught.
• A high level of accuracy and excellent attention to detail.  With satisfaction taken from producing high quality work.
• Have good problem solving skills, be reliable, punctual, and able to work well within a small team.
• Be comfortable using, or willing to learn how to use, other workshop equipment such as rivet guns, eyelet machines and heat presses. 
• The nature of the job requires lifting and carrying heavy rolls of fabric and boxes, and using equipment that requires a degree of upper body strength, so this is something that you must be capable of, and comfortable with.
• It is advantageous but not essential to have: formal training in a creative field, photoshop and illustrator proficiency, pattern cutting knowledge, experience working in a workshop environment. An interest in textile product design and construction, craftsmanship or the photography/film/studio industries.
