Job Description

We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join the engineering team within the Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS). This is a senior, hands-on role with responsibility for supporting software delivery, cloud infrastructure, and the development of scalable engineering platforms. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will play a pivotal role throughout the development and operations lifecycle. With a strong focus on automation, integration, infrastructure as code, operational excellence, and developer enablement, you will help design, build, and continuously improve the tools, platforms, and processes that underpin efficient software delivery. You will contribute to the evolution of cloud-native solutions, enhance system reliability and resilience, and empower engineering teams through self-service capabilities and modern DevOps practices.,

  • Define, architect, and govern DevOps processes.

  • Optimise live and non-production environments

  • Design, build, and maintain shared CI/CD pipeline frameworks and self-service platform capabilities

  • Deliver the implementation of secure engineering practices.

  • Improve service operability and reliability through engineering

  • Influence system and service design at an architectural level

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the DevOps function

  • Mentor, coach, and technically lead DevOps engineers

  • Act as a key partner to cross-functional stakeholders

  • Champion modern engineering, cloud, platform engineering, and security practices across teams

What You Need

  • Advanced, hands-on experience across modern cloud, automation, and software engineering practices, full details are listed in the Job Description.

  • Experience owning the design, evolution, and governance of CI/CD pipelines across multiple product teams. Able to shape delivery approaches across cloud and hybrid environments, optimise build systems, integrate analysis and security tooling, and enable teams to deliver autonomously. Skilled in designing automated cloud infrastructure with reusable infrastructure as code patterns and enforcing standards that reduce manual change and improve consistency.

  • Ensures teams adopt modern engineering best practices and platform patterns, including automation, reuse, version control, code review, and infrastructure as code. Identifies optimisation opportunities proactively and leads continuous improvement initiatives that improve delivery flow, reduce toil, and strengthen developer experience. Advises on tooling, methodologies, and engineering processes.

  • Designs robust observability frameworks using logs, metrics, tracing, and actionable alerting to ensure cross-system visibility. Guides others in troubleshooting complex, multi-layer issues, drives improvements for reliability and performance, and uses incident response and post-incident learning to strengthen service resilience.

  • Designs and reviews solutions with deep security considerations, ensuring alignment with enterprise policies. Implements secure-by-design approaches and automated controls across pipelines, cloud resources, identities, secrets, and tooling. Ensures platforms and delivery workflows meet security best practices and governance standards.

  • Engages with users, internal customers, and stakeholders at a strategic level, with particular focus on the needs of engineering teams consuming shared tooling and platforms. Ensures engineering work aligns with user needs and organisational values around equality, diversity, and inclusion. Facilitates feedback loops and advocates for improvements that enhance developer experience, platform usability, and service quality.

About The Team

About The Team The role sits within the engineering team, in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), which is in the Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS). PDS works with the House of Commons and the House of Lords to realise the digital ambitions of a modern Parliament, and to support in building a digital democracy. The engineering team builds and manages bespoke software products that Parliament wants to run itself, to best meet the needs of its users (including Members, Peers, staff, and the public). The directorate is responsible for public-facing products (such as our public APIs and websites), alongside internal applications for users across the Parliamentary community (such as voting systems and the intranet). UK Parliament is steeped in history and tradition. It is an important part of UK life, and we need to ensure as many people as possible can engage with its work. This is why we are at the start of a huge transformation programme powered by technology. The Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS) works with the House of Commons and the House of Lords with all their IT and digital needs. We are here to realise the digital ambitions of a modern Parliament and welcome you to join us in building a digital democracy.
