Job Description

Role: Control Engineer – Electricity Networks

Location: London

Working Pattern: Hybrid – 3 days per week in the office

Salary: Up to £80,000 + bonus

Sector: Electricity Networks/Utilities

The Opportunity

An established and growing electricity networks business is looking for a Control Engineer to join its Network Operations team in London.

This is a key operational role supporting the safe, compliant and efficient operation of an electricity distribution network, with responsibility for network monitoring, control, switching, fault response and restoration across LV, HV and EHV assets.

The ideal candidate will come from a DNO, IDNO, ICP or wider electricity distribution environment, with previous experience in network control, control room operations, switching or real-time network management.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced DNO network professional looking to move into a growing organisation and play a key role in developing its operational capability.

Key Responsibilities

Network Monitoring & Control

  • Monitor network performance and operational status using SCADA and other network management systems.
  • Coordinate planned switching activities and network outages.
  • Support the safe and effective operation of LV, HV and EHV network assets.
  • Identify and escalate operational risks, network abnormalities and faults.
  • Maintain accurate control logs, switching schedules and operational records.

Fault Response & Restoration

  • Receive and manage reports of network faults and incidents.
  • Coordinate contractor attendance and fault response activities.
  • Monitor restoration progress and communicate with relevant stakeholders.
  • Support rapid restoration of customer supplies and minimise network interruptions.
  • Assist with post-fault investigations and incident reviews.
  • Support emergency response activities during major network incidents.

SCADA & Operational Systems

  • Monitor alarms, events and communications relating to operational assets.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of SCADA and remote monitoring systems.
  • Assist with the commissioning and integration of new network assets into the control environment.
  • Maintain accurate asset operational data and network connectivity records.

Asset & Network Operations

  • Support inspection and maintenance programmes for substations and associated network assets.
  • Review maintenance reports and identify operational issues requiring escalation.
  • Maintain accurate asset records and operational documentation.
  • Support network adoption assessments and operational reviews.
  • Work closely with DNOs, ICPs, contractors and other network stakeholders.

Safety & Compliance

  • Operate in accordance with company Safety Rules and operational procedures.
  • Support compliance with relevant electricity industry legislation, standards and procedures.
  • Promote a strong safety culture across all operational activities.
  • Participate in safety reviews, audits and operational investigations.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Produce operational reports covering faults, outages and network performance.
  • Support KPI reporting and performance monitoring.
  • Assist with developing and updating operational procedures.
  • Contribute to the continued development of network control and operational processes.

About You

We're particularly interested in speaking with candidates who have a background in electricity distribution or network operations, ideally gained within a DNO environment.

You may currently be working as a:

Essential Experience

  • Strong understanding of LV and HV electrical networks.
  • Experience of network operations, switching and fault response.
  • Experience using operational management or network control systems.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple operational priorities in a time-critical environment.

Desirable

  • Current or previous experience within a DNO, IDNO or ICP.
  • Control room or real-time network operations experience.
