Job title:

Electrochemical Reactor Engineer (2 year Fixed Term Contract)

Location:

Cambridge, UK

Why Join SLB?

At SLB, innovation and sustainability are at the core of everything we do. We develop technologies that deliver cleaner, safer, and more accessible energy, helping to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

As an Electrochemical Reactor Engineer in our Cambridge Research Laboratory, you will play a vital role in translating cutting-edge science into real-world engineering solutions. You’ll gain hands-on experience designing and building advanced reactor systems, working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that will accelerate your technical growth and career development—while contributing to technologies that shape the future of energy and environmental sustainability.

Job Summary:

Are you passionate about electrochemical systems and building real-world technologies that address global challenges? Join SLB, a global leader in advanced engineering and digital innovation, at a time when the need for sustainable solutions has never been greater.

As part of our Cambridge Research Laboratory, you will work at the forefront of next-generation reactor design, developing cutting-edge electrochemical systems for water treatment and contaminant destruction. This is a unique opportunity to combine fundamental science with hands-on engineering, contributing to technologies that enable cleaner water and more sustainable industrial processes.

At SLB, we are committed to driving innovation that supports the energy transition and environmental stewardship. In this role, you will play a key part in shaping scalable solutions to critical challenges such as PFAS contamination—while gaining experience in a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment that will accelerate your career.

We are seeking a highly skilled Electrochemical Reactor Engineer to lead the development of our next-generation water treatment systems. This role sits at the intersection of advanced hardware development and intelligent process control. You will take ownership of designing, simulating and automating state-of-the-art electrochemical reactors optimized for the destruction of recalcitrant contaminants like PFAS.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and scale flow-through electrochemical reactors operating at high current densities
  • Select advanced electrode materials (e.g. BDD) to maximise defluorination and energy efficiency
  • Optimise mass transport and fluid dynamics
  • Develop automated control systems with real-time monitoring and optimisation
  • Build and operate prototypes, delivering systems from concept to functional hardware

What We’re Looking For:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in Chemical, Electrochemical, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong experience in electrochemical systems, flow reactors, and scale-up
  • Expertise in automation, sensors, and process control systems
  • Proven track record delivering working reactor hardware
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

What we can offer you:

Competitive base salary, private healthcare for employee & family, subsidised dental care, Health & Wellbeing programs such as the Employee Mental health support, health & wellness coaching, part employer and employee funded pension contribution, Income protection scheme, life insurance.

Other benefits are also available through the SLB flexible benefits program.
